Either feat would arguably establish Qyburn as one of the greatest medical and scientific innovators in Westerosi history, and perhaps the world.

He has conquered death. What the red priests can only accomplish with magic, the maester has accomplished using only his mind. Moreover, the lumbering beast he created has already proven invaluable to Cersei's plans, and we've barely even seen the knife's edge of his capabilities in combat yet. Qyburn, having just taken control of Lord Varys' network of "little birds," was instrumental in the success of Cersei's fiery coup. Not only did he verify rumors of the wildfire stockpiles beneath the Great Sept of Baelor in the season six episode "No One," his subterfuge was doubtless the key factor in actually enabling the plot to succeed, from preparing the trap to luring Lancel Lannister to his cruel demise beneath the sept.

In one fell stroke, the wildfires consumed every noble of note in King's Landing, all leaders of the sparrows, and the queen Cersei hated — not to mention King Tommen, a death by suicide they did not anticipate but nonetheless resulted in the queen mother's ultimate power move. Without Qyburn, Cersei would have been powerless to pull her massive murder scheme off.

Technically, the bombing probably qualifies as the Game of Thrones world's first terrorist attack. Later on, at a meeting of the small council , Cersei appoints Qyburn as the new Master of Whisperers to replace Varys. Grand Maester Pycelle protests vehemently given Qyburn's outcast status, and Kevan Lannister denounces Qyburn as a sycophant and Cersei as a power-grabber. Qyburn is present at a small council meeting when the High Septon demands the execution of the High Sparrow after his followers attack him.

Qyburn informs the council that the High Septon had been at Littlefinger's brothel. Later, Qyburn kills a rat as part of an experiment when Cersei enters his laboratory, giving him a message that she wants sent to Petyr Baelish.

She also asks him about the state of his work, while glancing at Gregor Clegane's covered body, and Qyburn assures her it is going very well, though there is still a way to go. Soon after Cersei leaves, as Qyburn writes, Gregor begins shaking under the blanket, but Qyburn shushes him calmly.

Qyburn is at the meeting of the small council when Mace Tyrell departs to negotiate the crown's debt with the Iron Bank of Braavos. He also informs her that King Tommen has become despondent following Cersei's arrest, and that he refuses to eat or see anyone. He suggests that she can simply confess to the charges and plead for mercy, subtly warning her that if there is a trial, the Faith will not wait for physical evidence to reach a verdict, only what they simply believe to be true, but she initially refuses.

Finally, just before leaving her, he informs her that "the work continues," referring to his experiments on Ser Gregor Clegane. Eventually, Cersei confesses to her relationship with her cousin Lancel to the High Sparrow , who agrees to set her free on the condition that she perform a walk of atonement. After Cersei enters the Red Keep following her walk, Qyburn hastily rushes to her side and throws a cloak over her naked body.

He then speaks to Cersei softly and reassuringly as he embraces her, attempting to soothe her. Pycelle looks upon the scene with disgust. Qyburn remarks upon her poor state and bleeding feet. Qyburn then introduces the "newest member of the Kingsguard ," the 7-foot tall abomination he has been working on.

At his behest, the golden knight picks her up and they walk away together, further into the Red Keep so Qyburn can clean her up and treat her wounds. In his laboratory, Qyburn continues to serve as Master of Whisperers by bribing a group of Varys 's little birds into his service with boxes of sweets. When Jaime and Cersei arrive accompanied by Gregor Clegane, the children are unnerved by the Mountain, though Qyburn promises them Clegane is a friend.

As part of her revenge, Cersei asks Qyburn to bribe more of Varys's spies stationed in the other kingdoms, and he agrees to do so. Accompanied by Qyburn and the Mountain, Cersei confronts the group. Lancel says she must be taken to the High Sparrow, however Cersei disregards what her cousin is saying. Qyburn then watches as Gregor kills one of the sparrows.

Later, Cersei, Qyburn, and Ser Gregor enter the Great Hall to find a large crowd gathered for a royal announcement, King Tommen then announces that Cersei and Loras Tyrell 's trial will be held in the sept of Baelor on the first day of the Festival of the Mother , and then declares that trial by combat is now forbidden.

After the announcement Qyburn tells a shocked Cersei, who had been planning on calling a trial by combat with Gregor as her champion, that his little birds have been investigating an old rumor that she had told him about, and that the rumor was found to be much more than a rumor.

Qyburn has his spies create leaks in the barrels containing the wildfire, then has them place candles in the middle of the resulting puddles, which slowly burn towards the wildfire.

Qyburn also has Pycelle assassinated by his spies so as to consolidate Cersei's power. Qyburn is present when Cersei holds court with Euron Greyjoy. When Lord Randyll Tarly asks about how Cersei is going to deal with Daenerys Targaryen 's dragons , Qyburn tells the lords that he has been working on a solution. He later takes Cersei down beneath the Red Keep to show her his new modified scorpion to kill one of Daenerys's dragons, inviting her to test it on the skull of Balerion , the dragon Aegon the Conqueror used to unite the Seven Kingdoms, and forge the Iron Throne.

Cersei tells Ellaria and Tyene that Qyburn managed to ascertain that they had poisoned her daughter with the long farewell. Cersei kisses Tyene with the long farewell and Qyburn gives Cersei the antidote. Cersei confers with Qyburn, who assures her the poison will mean certain death for Tyene, but how long the poison will take to kill depends largely on the strength of the victim's constitution.

Qyburn and the others then leave a distraught Ellaria to mourn with her dying daughter. Qyburn's scorpion is used in Battle of the Goldroad , when Bronn fires it into Drogon 's shoulder. It succeeds at injuring Drogon enough to make him land.

Angered, the dragon destroys the weapon with dragonfire shortly after. Upon Jaime's return to King's Landing and his secret meeting with Tyrion, Qyburn reveals to Cersei that she is pregnant. She dismisses Qyburn after Jaime walks into the room, allowing Cersei to reveal the good news to her brother in private. Qyburn is present at the meeting at the dragonpit , which he helped Cersei organize.

He comes forward after Sandor Clegane begins cutting up the captured wight presented to Cersei, reaching for the wight 's severed arm, and examining it with genuine curiosity, although even he seems somewhat unnerved by it.

Qyburn gives the hand to Jon Snow , who then burns the wight's hand to reveal one of its weaknesses. Qyburn remains Cersei's Hand of the Queen. As she watches the Iron Fleet returning to King's Landing with the Golden Company , Qyburn informs her that he has received word the Night King 's undead army has breached the Wall and invaded the North.

Cersei's response is a dismissive "Good". On Cersei's orders, Qyburn tracks down Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, finding him in the middle of a foursome with three prostitutes in a King's Landing brothel. After briefly unsettling Bronn by informing him one of his female companions will be dead of pox within the year, Qyburn explains that Cersei wishes to hire Bronn and is willing to grant him the castle, lordship, and highborn bride Jaime and Tyrion both promised him asserting that the original deal involving his marriage to Lollys Stokeworth was scrapped by Jaime, not Cersei when Bronn protests , as well as offering an advance payment in the form of a wagon full of gold for his service.

Bronn initially refuses, guessing that Cersei wants him as an assassin to kill Daenerys , but Qyburn instead tells him he is being hired to assassinate Jaime and Tyrion despite Bronn's previous service to both for their betrayal of Cersei in the event they survive the undead invasion of the North ; Qyburn presents him with Joffrey's crossbow for the task, leaving him speechless, though he is clearly given pause when Qyburn reminds Bronn Cersei doesn't stint in rewarding loyal service, citing his own elevation to the position of Cersei's Hand as proof.

Qyburn informs Cersei that thousands of people have accepted the offer of refuge in the Red Keep against the invading Daenerys Targaryen. He later negotiates with Tyrion outside the gates of King's Landing , unsuccessfully requesting the unconditional surrender of Daenerys's army.

When Drogon starts ravaging King's Landing , Qyburn convinces Cersei to flee Red Keep as it is unsafe and are saved by Gregor from the falling debris while fleeing. They are confronted by the Hound who slays all the surviving Queensguard and wants to fight Gregor, who also wishes the same. Qyburn orders him to obey his Queen, when she demands that Gregor continues to protect her, but Gregor simply picks him up and smashes him into a crumbled wall, cracking his skull and spurting blood, before throwing him head-first into sharp debris that destroys the back of his head, killing Qyburn.

He lay there dead while Cersei walked past him and the Cleganes commenced their battle. Although never confirmed, several Grand Maesters have alleged, including Pycelle , that Qyburn is a dark magician who studies and practices black magic.

Despite this, he is shown to have a great talent for healing, such as being able to clean the highly infected stump of Jaime Lannister without having to amputate his entire arm. Qyburn also has an exceptional knowledge of the human body, owing to his years of experimenting on living people at the Citadel. It seems as though Qyburn possesses the magical ability to raise and manipulate those from the dead, defying the natural boundaries between life and death.

It is heavily implied his successful reanimation of Gregor Clegane into a mindless zombie involved dark magic, and he also showed interest in the hand of the captured wight , potentially showing his interest and talent in necromancy. Externally, Qyburn appears to be an extremely harmless, polite and serene old man - he behaves calmly and patiently around everyone he meets, even if they do not have a good impression of him.

Jaime viewed him as an "odd little man" and didn't entirely trust him, even when Qyburn operated on the wound left by his severed hand.

Qyburn has proven himself to be, in his own right, highly intelligent to a fault, so much that he was the only one who knew a way to save Ser Gregor Clegane after he was savagely wounded by Oberyn Martell during their fateful duel in the trial by combat.

When Qyburn expressed that he knew a way of saving Gregor, he did so without bragging, instead that it was a matter of fact, which Pycelle interpreted as arrogance and pride. Qyburn is, at the same time, extremely secretive, not truly revealing the methods he used to save the Mountain, instead expressing that the process would change Gregor, but not weaken him, and make him supremely obedient to Cersei.

Qyburn doesn't seem to express any outward disdain towards Ser Gregor for almost killing him at Harrenhal, but then again Qyburn rarely expresses disdain for much of anything - Qyburn goes so far as to call Gregor his friend while the man is undergoing his experiments.

It is therefore unknown whether Qyburn suggested he experiment on Ser Gregor out of revenge or if he simply did so in the interest of his constant pursuit of knowledge.

In spite of Qyburn's soft and calm exterior, he is potentially a very dangerous man because of his secretive, ruthless and unethical methods. The Citadel once expelled Qyburn on the basis that the experiments that he enacted were unnatural and unacceptable, which Qyburn deemed foolish. Pycelle scorns Qyburn for this, naming him an embarrassment to the Citadel. Qyburn maintained his loyalty to Cersei and carried out any task she set for him, but it is unspecified if he had personal reasons or if he was simply loyal to Cersei.

Qyburn was quick to end the interference of Pycelle in Cersei's plots by having him assassinated by his little birds. In spite of this, Qyburn expressed that he himself didn't have any personal grievances towards Pycelle and even told the old man that the necessity of murdering him pained Qyburn - this shows that Qyburn does not have sadistic or murderous intentions, but simply saw the act of killing the old Grand Maester as utterly necessary to consolidate Cersei's power.

However, none of these factors prevented Qyburn from having a look of cold satisfaction on his face as he watched his little birds overwhelm Pycelle. This satisfaction was also shown when he witnessed Gregor Clegane ripping a man's head off during a showdown with the sparrows, showing that Qyburn is capable of taking satisfaction from his work and his actions. In terms of how efficient he is as Cersei's right hand man, Qyburn is actually impressive in that he hasn't changed loyalties at all since rising to this position; he has striven to serve Cersei's interests, good or bad, to the end, and notably is the first to comfort her in the aftermath of her walk of atonement.

He has proven also that he is surprisingly resourceful in his own right: His scorpion is, however briefly, a good asset to Cersei's war against Daenerys Targaryen, managing to severely injure Drogon, who is ultimately able to destroy it. Qyburn's curious and clever nature is also shown when he is actually intrigued by the sight of the wight brought to the Dragonpit, calmly observing the severed hand of the creature.

Qyburn never met Robb Stark, nor was he imprisoned while staying at Harrenhal, and he never met Gregor Clegane until after the latter's fight with Oberyn Martell.

Qyburn is rumored to practice black sorcery and necromancy. Despite his horrific experiments, Qyburn has a very kindly, fatherly appearance - Cersei thinks he looks like some little girl's image of her favorite grandfather.

Qyburn fell in with the Brave Companions at some point, who had been hired by the Lannisters and were based around Harrenhal. Gregor Clegane reportedly dies in Qyburn's underground laboratory. Cersei allows Qyburn to use various prisoners for his experiments, which typically prove fatal to the subject. As Qyburn prefers women for his studies, the prisoners include Cersei's former handmaiden, Senelle, and some female puppeteers who had been arrested for performing a treasonous play. Thinking about what's going on in Qyburn's dungeons, Cersei recalls a "foul thing screaming in the darkness".

When Lady Falyse Stokeworth comes to Cersei in despair after the failure of their plans to kill Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, who had married Falyse's sister Lollys, Cersei tells Qyburn to take her for his experiments, to make her disappear, so that no one will ever hear about this, especially Tyrion. While performing his experiments and torture in the dungeons, Qyburn wears roughspun wool and a blacksmith's leather apron.

With Loras gone Qyburn suggests to Cersei that the Kingsguard may need a replacement in case Loras dies. Qyburn orders a massive suit of armor for his proposed champion, though it is supposedly too large and heavy to be worn by any man. Cersei has a nightmare about Maggy the Frog's prophecy of her future, and the next morning asks Qyburn about it. He identifies the name "Maggy" as a corruption of maegi, and says that her blood magic is the darkest and most powerful kind of sorcery.

Cersei asks if the prophecy can be forestalled, and Qyburn intimates it can be, if she kills the younger queen who would supplant her. Since Tywin's death, the whole capital undergone a religious riot against the nobility.

This people are mostly refugees from the chaotic riverlands, where most of the war had been fought. This smallfolk rebel movement known as the Sparrows takes over the Faith and the Great Sept of Baelor, stopping the elections for the new High Septon, that had Septon Luceon Frey almost winning. The Sparrows force the Faith to elect the High Sparrow , leader of the movement.

It gets worse when Cersei foolishly supports the High Sparrow in the restoration of the Faith Militant , thinking it would create a great spiritual opposition against Stannis. Soon the news of Cersei's actions spread wildly throughout the entire realm, now tired of corruption, and many lords and knights join the Faith Militant.

Plotting to put the Tyrells against the Faith, Cersei plots with Qyburn and Ser Osney Kettleblack to frame Queen Margaery Tyrell of adultery and impurity, using many disliked court members as "Margaery lovers", most of them being stormlanders and reachmen Baratheon and Tyrell men.

Cersei has Qyburn torture the Blue Bard in the black cells, to convince him to give evidence against Margaery. Qyburn and Cersei force the Blue Bard to say exactly the accusing story they want to hear. The torture goes on forever and breaks the Bard's mind that even after the Blue Bard is taken by the Faith Militant and tortured by them, he persists in the story that Cersei and Qyburn had taught him.

Other men falsely accused of being Margaery's lovers are given into Qyburn's care in the dungeons. Osney confessed to have murdered the previous High Septon on Cersei's order and about Cersei's sexual intercurses with multiple people at court.

After Cersei is arrested by the Faith, Qyburn is allowed to visit her in her cell and inform her of all that has happened since her arrest. Qyburn has been dismissed from the small council, though he is allowed to work with Varys's whisperers. Qyburn's unnamed champion is ready to defend her, but Cersei informs Qyburn that she can only be represented in a trial by combat by a knight of the Kingsguard, and there are no open positions available.

Cersei has him write a letter to her brother Jaime at Riverrun, begging for his help. King's Landing falls under control of the Faith, but before the High Septon can solidify his power, Lord Randyll Tarly appears in the city with a whole army of reachmen and stormlanders, which results with the High Septon handing over Margaery and her cousins to Lord Tarly, without nullifying the girls'trial.

Lord Regent Kevan Lannister visits Cersei in her cell, and tells her that Qyburn is still in charge of the dungeons where most of the accused lovers of Margaery Tyrell are held. Kevan also informs her that Ser Arys Oakheart has been killed in Dorne, and Cersei realizes that leaves an empty place in the Kingsguard. She asks Kevan to tell Qyburn that the time has come for his champion. Qyburn is present at the Red Keep when Cersei completes her walk of atonement through King's Landing.

Qyburn tells her that Robert has taken a vow of silence, swearing not to speak until all of King Tommen I Baratheon's enemies are dead and evil has been driven from the realm.

Qyburn, though dismissed from the small council, still works with the eunuch's whisperers. Qyburn continues to work with the whisperers, reporting information on the Golden Company and Nymeria Sand to the small council and Kevan.

Margaery remains under Tarly's care until the day of her trial. Qyburn was held captive at Harrenhal by Ser Gregor Clegane , until the latter abandons the castle and has all the captives killed.

Qyburn survives and stays at Harrenhal with Lord Roose Bolton. With Cersei more and more relying on him, he also takes over Varys' informants and uses them to gather information. On Cersei's orders, he has his little birds investigate a rumor and finds a vast stash of wildfire underneath the Great Sept of Baelor.

Together with Cersei, he organizes the complete destruction of the Sept by having one of his birds igniting the wildfire. While the sept is destroyed, killing most of Cersei's enemies, Qyburn faces Grand Maester Pycelle and has him stabbed to death by his little birds. Qyburn later crowns Cersei in the Throne Room.
