The fight can be slightly cheesed by equipping everyone with Mirror Mail and using Curaja. It's a somewhat risky strategy as if you get unlucky with some of his attacks you'll be injured, low on MP, and won't be able to heal your party quickly, but with a lucky roll of the dice this can take him down very quickly. The Way Stone is currently non-functional so ignore it and examine the Carven Pillars carven?
Defeating enemies may cause them to drop a Black Orb which you can grab, and there are three altars arrayed around the central spout of water which each need an orb depositing. You only need three, but it doesn't hurt to have spares. The area is a bit of a maze, but there's no compulsion to explore it all. Start by heading through the exit south of the Way Stone and turn left; follow the passage as it goes south east, east, and then north east, making sure to grab a couple of Orbs on the way.
Exit through the door back into the circular chamber and head north east to find the first altar, then retrace your steps.
You can find the second Altar in the south portion of the main area which you can just get to by walking south east from the Way Stone. Repeat this for the door to the north of the Way Stone - follow the passage as it goes north east, east, and south east, grab a couple of Black Orbs on the way, and then take the exit back into the circular area and make your way west to find another altar. Head back into the labyrinth, take the door on your left, then right, then left, then right, right again, and head straight through the next two to find a staircase.
Climb to the top and open the door into Blackrock Vault which will whisk you away to a boss fight. A wrong turning here will teleport you right back to the start but thankfully it's a short trip - just head up the slope just ahead to your right, take the right hand path, and walk towards the large… rock?
This guy will use Flash and Stone Gaze to inflict Blind and Petrify, so wear an accessory that protects against one and deal with the other as it comes. Berzerk Reddas and then attack the boss with conventional or wind-based weapons and Aeroga. If you have the Expose Technick he seems particularly vulnerable to it.
The rest of his moves are straight from the tortoise playbook, so keep your weakest character at a safe distance. Once his defences are back down resume the attack - he's got no more tricks to pull. Elsewhere, there's our hidden Espers strategy and locations and Elite Hunts and Marks pages, how to get the best Zodiac Jobs for each character , advice on farming LP from Jellies and even how to get the Zodiac Spear. For this section we recommend adjusting your party's gambits so they only attack the leader's target - there are a couple of enemies you don't want to kill so you don't want one of your companions getting strange notions of their own.
The goal here is to kill all the green Brainpans in each section to create a bridge to the next. The path is fairly linear and there's no way of taking a wrong turn, but it's worth investigating all the dead ends as some have a false wall at the end called a Fool's Facade - hit X at the prompt and you'll usually find a treasure of some sort behind it.
The third flight begins on 28F climbing to 29F where you will find two more Brainpan enemies. Defeat them both and continue up to the next level 30F. Do a U-turn and go through the Ancient Door heading west and defeat the Brainpan inside the room. There is another Brainpan up the stairs leading south from 30F. Travel eastward until you reach the next area which will contain an enemy to the right of the top of the stairs called a Deidar.
Deidar enemies look and behave very similar to Brainpans except that the flames coming out of the top of their heads are red instead of green. Defeating a Deidar will negate the effects of defeating a Brainpan and will actually remove the green pieces of bridge that the Brainpan enemies have been adding.
It will be important to kill these Deidar enemies later to reach two secret areas that require red bridge pieces that they spawn but we will take care of that later. Proceed across the bridge on 31F. If you accidentally defeated the Deidar, return down the stairs and locate another Brainpan enemy as they will respawn in various areas around the Wellspring Ravel. You will have to use the flee command Button to prevent Reddas from accidentally attacking Deidars on the way by.
Continue heading westward and skip past the Deidar enemies for now, defeating all of the Brainpans on the way up and around the circular part of the map on 35F. There is a large bridge that forms from all of the Brainpans up at the top of 35F — continue until the bridge is completed and then walk across. At this point, you should now begin killing Deidar enemies as they will help form a red bridge across this pathway. Travel south into the next area Wellspring Ravel — 4th Flight to find a Deidar at the top of the stairs you will have to run past two Brainpans.
There are two more Deidars a little bit further up. Then turn around and head back to all of the previous Deidar enemies that you passed on your way up and defeat them too. Continue defeating Deidars until the bridge forms all the way across both spans, resetting them as necessary by leaving the zone. One bridge goes north and one goes west and you can use them to reach the furthest platform. The treasure chests there if they spawned contains a Gungnir spear and the second chest on the furthest platform contains the Magick spell Holy - one of the most powerful Magick spells in the game and well worth your time to obtain.
There is one more secret area that you can reach back on the Wellspring Ravel - 2nd Flight which can only be accessed by killing Diedar enemies. Shown in the screenshot below, you can use this pathway to reach a treasure chest that contains a Perseus Bow , one of the strongest Bows in the game. Make sure that you defeat at least 10 Deidars before you proceed up the remainder of the 4th Flight in order to make a rare monster appear named Vishno.
Vishno has a chance of dropping a Ribbon accessory, although the chance is relatively small. The 4th Flight contains one more pathway that requires defeating Brainpans in order to get past. Continue all the way up to 48F and into the next zone. Save your game and head to the southwest portion of the circle to find another set of stairs leading up. There is another boss battle coming up. There is a treasure chest in front of the doorway that contains a Black Mask which is an incredibly important item for fights later on in the game.
Inside the player enters the Wellspring on the first floor the floor is indicated by a number below the map , which is surrounded by an area called the Wellspring Labyrinth. Inside the Labyrinth are Mistmares , which often drop Black Orbs as loot. Claiming three of these orbs and using them on the Altars of Night, which are Way Stone-like devices in the Wellspring, will open up a door at the back of the Wellspring Labyrinth on the second floor; opening it trigger a battle against Pandaemonium.
Its defeat activates the Waystone in the entry hall of the Wellspring, which leads to the tenth floor. In this area, the player must kill Brainpans, which create green bridges to the next area. Deidars, which resemble Brainpans but are red, damage green bridges upon their death, and after all green bridges have been built, create red bridges to secret items.
Upon reaching the fiftieth floor, this cycle will end, and the player will face a boss, Slyt. On the fifty-first floor are four Altars: the Altar of Knowledge, which prevents the party from using the on-screen map; the Altar of Steel, which prevents the party from using physical attacks; the Altar of Wealth, which prevents the characters from using items; and the Altar of Magick, which prevents the casting of magick.
Regardless of the player's choice, selecting an Altar will create a pathway; the four pathways are identical labyrinths up stairs from the sixty-first floor, where the labyrinth starts, to the sixty-fourth floor. On the sixty-fifth floor, the party faces Fenrir , and then proceeds to the sixty-sixth floor, where they can recover their items, attacks, magick, or map, and ride the Dais of Ascendance to the sixty-seventh floor, which has a Way Stone leading to the Third Ascent.
In the final ascent, the party must enter different Way Stones; the wrong Way Stone will return the party to the entrance, or, worse, force them to fight against an undead army before returning to the entrance. The first three correct Way Stones are: black, green, red; and the fourth depends on which Altar was used in the Second Ascent.
Afterward they can enter a lift to the ninety-first floor, and ascend the final few floors to find the Sun-Cryst and encounter Judge Gabranth , Doctor Cid , and Famfrit, the Darkening Cloud. Pylraster is a Mark whose hunt becomes available after the events in the Pharos.
The hunt is petitioned by Rikken in Balfonheim Port , but he is not sure where to find it. It is not necessary to create a chain. The Tower is found in the Third Ascent by using the colorless Waystone, and will appear as soon as the player is brought to the area with the Dais of Ascendance on 88F.
If it does not spawn, the player should take the Waystone back to 79F and use it again to warp back to 88F, and it will eventually appear. The Grand Helm is obtainable as a very rare drop from it. Avenger is difficult during the first visit to the Pharos, as it has several dangerous moves, such as Anti-Magick , Ardor , and Renew. The Muramasa , the second strongest non-elemental katana , can be stolen from it.
To find the Avenger, the player must have spoken to the "Huntmaster" in Phon Coast and defeated Thalassinon , which will trigger the start of the Rare Game quest. Alternately, one can kill off all the monsters in the area and then zone out to the Reach of the Damned area 64F. When reentering Station of Ascension 63F , Avenger should be right at the bottom of the stairs.
The map can be found on 79F, Spire Ravel 1st Flight. The Ridorana Lighthouse appears as the second raid in the Return to Ivalice raid series in patch 4. The Pharos appears as the main setting of Act 2 Chapter 10, where Gabranth is a recruitable character.
